Up on the inside, down on the outside:
This direction supports you in cleansing and releasing any stuck energy, emotions or thoughts. It also opens the flow of energy in the tissue, which is why it’s always the first direction.

Down on the inside, up on the outside:
This direction supports you in building energy or a quality you desire.
Take Extra Care:
- Listen to how your breasts and body desire to be touched – some days it may be a deeper massage, and other days you might just lightly trace the directions on your skin
- While you can do this massage over clothes if needed, I recommend you use a skin-friendly organic oil on bare skin. Coconut, jojoba, almond and sesame are great! Just don’t go for something that has strong fragrance or essential oils, as it can irritate the more delicate nipple tissue.
- You can use your fingertips or your palms, whatever feels best to you in the moment
- You are welcome to add this element to the breath as you massage the breasts: when you inhale, lightly squeeze your pelvic floor and anus, and relax them as you exhale
- If you’ve had a mastectomy, you can do the whole breast massage practice with the energy of your breasts. This area of your body still houses all of the same energetic qualities, so you can still receive all of the benefits from this practice! The more you move energy through your whole chest area, the healthier it will be, and the more you’ll naturally feel connected to a sense of deep love inside.
Other Details:
- Frequency: You can do this practice however often you can – you can’t overdo it!
- Breath Pace: You can breathe at whatever pace is comfortable for you during the practice. Just make sure you stay with the breath, and allow it to be deep, relaxed and connected.
- Time of Day: Morning is typically the best time to do breast massage, as it can energize you. It just depends how sensitive you are to energy. You can play with the time of day that most supports you. If you do the massage before bed, just make sure you focus on elongating your exhalations and resting deeply to avoid activating your system energetically.
- You can play with massaging directly over the nipples if this increases the sensation for you. There is an energy line around the nipples that is very supportive to touch and work with, which is why it is traditionally practiced stroking around the nipples. If you massage directly over the nipples, just make sure you don’t miss around them as well.
- If you are breastfeeding, you can still do this whole massage! This can be a deeply nourishing practice, and can help move the milk down through the ducts. Just massage very gentle and listen to your body’s needs and desires. It can also support you in circulating vitality and pleasure through your breasts during a time when they are a source of so much nourishment for baby.
- If you have tender breasts during the Luteal phase of your cycle (the week or so before menstruating), this is completely normal. You can stick with the first releasing direction (down on the outside, up on the inside) because it will help move water retention, soreness and any emotional content in the breasts before your period. You can save the other direction for the rest of your cycle.
- Contraindications: do not do the second direction (energy building) if you have breast cancer or any other conditions of the breast tissue.
- If you’ve had breast cancer in the past and it’s completely healed, you can focus on bringing deep health and vitality into the breast tissue while massaging the second direction. If you have any concerns about the health of your breasts, you can focus on this while cupping the breasts, or continuing to massage in the first direction.
- If you have a single benign cyst and healthy breasts, you can still do both directions. However, if you have more than one cyst or are unsure about your breast health, just do the first direction (down on the outside, up on the inside) for a few months and see what happens with your breasts. Massaging in this direction will really support you in moving and releasing any energy that’s pent up in the cysts and other tissue.
